The new song, called It's a New Day made its debut on iTunes last night (you can download it here), and will be shown on this afternoon's episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show. Usability Post » Experience vs. Function — a Beautiful UI is Not Always the
Oct 17 3:56a.m. 2008  [Internet] | Comments |
A good user interface (UI) is essential if you want your product to be usable, but you must always be careful to not fall into the trap of focusing too much on that interface.  A good UI should fade away, putting content in the front seat — it should be transparent. Sometimes there can be too [...]

Ask 37signals: How did you come up with pricing for your products? - (37sig

Mattijs asks:

I am developing an internet product and I am rapidly approaching the point at which I will need to set a pricing scheme for this product. Problem: I have no idea what to shoot for! I have done some research which shows a wide range of similar products with varying pricing schemes. When 37signals was developing Basecamp, how did you come up with pricing?

When we first priced Basecamp in Feburary 2004 the plans were $9, $19, $39, and $59. There wasn’t much science behind it. We asked ourselves a couple questions:

1. What would we pay ...

10 Programming Proverbs Every Developer Should Know
Oct 07 11:34p.m. 2008  [Programming] | Comments |

Proverbs are used to express universal truths or life lessons in a short and memorable fashion.  I find that they are a great way to keep things in perspective, both in life and in work.  Because of this, I have assembled 10 programming proverbs that every developer needs in their arsenal.

1. There is no smoke without fire

Relax. It's probably just another fire drill

Poorly designed code tends to manifest itself through some common tell-tale signs.  Some examples of these are:

  • Giant classes and/or functions
  • Large blocks of commented out code
  • Duplicated logic
  • Deeply nested if/else ...

Google's Moment of Truth: Stock Hits $350
Oct 07 11:25p.m. 2008  [Technology] | Comments |

Larry Page White Coat.jpgGoogle's stock is now down more than 50% from its high, at a level that most Google fans (and analysts) would have considered unthinkable a year ago. In fact, the stock has now dropped to a level it hasn't seen consistently in more than three years. And it's still not cheap (although it's certainly getting there).

Google's stock collapse will likely have several impacts on the company. All will likely become more pronounced the longer the stock stays at these levels (or, god forbid, falls further):

Angry shareholders will increasingly pressure management to be more ...

Why do people contribute to social media? :: Blog :: Headshift
Oct 06 3:29a.m. 2008  [Social Media] | Comments |

On the face of things, it's a tricky question - why would someone spend valuable time and effort contributing to something like Wikipedia? In a work environment, how can you persuade people to contribute their hard-won expertise and knowledge into a corporate wiki when they're already doing perfectly well at their jobs with that knowledge secure inside their heads?

These are key questions when trying to maximise the chances of a successful social media implementation.Fortunately there are a few academic theories that might go some way to explaining the potential problems - although most date from the mid-Fifties and ...

One of the toughest conversations I have with many startup founders is about salaries.  Founders may come from larger companies that pay them an annual salary and the idea of getting *no* cash for a significant period of time is really hard to wrap one’s mind around.  The argument goes something like this: “I make $X [...]

Toro

Ah yes another Twitter client, if you have not found your ideal Twitter client then this is another one to try. Toro is a very simple Twitter client that aims for a speedier Twitter by developer Christopher Hayen.

For your download you get an Adobe AIR application with a tabbed interface for recent, public, friends, replies and search. I must admit that it is fairly quick loading in my streams and it’s nice to have the new Twitter search integrated.

Although I do miss not having a tab for direct tweets, and personally now that we have Twitter search ...
