Stacey Avarinia, best know for being the woman behind the “drunk breastfeeding” case, was sentenced today in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

The judge gave her 18 months in jail but suspended all but 6 months of the sentence.

Judge Sonja Clapp said she could reduce her sentence by getting substance abuse treatment. I wonder, is her allegedly woman-beating boyfriend going to get anger management treatment? Or are we only going to punish the mother, who has apparently been separated from her daughter all this time.

The swine flu has been widely believed to eventually become resistant to Tamiflu, an antiviral flu drug administered orally. Many people rely on Tamiflu instead of the vaccine for the seasonal flu to avoid contact with thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative found in most types of flu vaccines. Kids from a summer camp in Northeast Philadelphia were turned away from a private pool, apparently because of their race. The Creative Steps Day Camp paid  almost $2000 to The Valley Swim Club, which is private but advertises open membership.

After the 60 kids arrived, however, it seemed they weren’t so welcome. Horace Gibson, a parent of a camper, told MSNBC:

The pool attendants came and told the black children that they did not allow minorities in the club and needed the children to leave immediately.

In what may be the first ban of its kind in the world, a rural Australian town has banned plastic water bottles.

Campaigners in Bundanoon (population 2,500) in New South Wales, were incensed after a beverage company proposed plans to tap an underground reservoir in the town, then bottle and sell the water.

Over 350 residents turned out to vote for the measure. Only 1 resident voted against the ban, along with a representative from the bottled water industry.

One campaigner, John Dee, told the BBC,

The AP reported Monday on the case of Stacey Anvarinia, the North Dakota woman who recently pleaded guilty to felony child neglect for breastfeeding under the influence. She could face 5 years in prison when she is sentenced in August.

After the Air France plane crash a month ago, search parties were not likely optimistic looking for survivors of the Yemenia Air flight that went down in the Indian Ocean.

But they found one. Bahia Bakari, 14, is so far the only survivor known. She can barely swim, but survived in the choppy waters in the dark and among bodies. Amazingly, she had no serious injuries, but reportedly had cuts to her face and a fractured collarbone.

North Dakota officials prosecuted a new mother, 26-year-old Stacey Anvarinia, for breastfeeding while intoxicated.

Police charged the Grand Forks mother after receiving a domestic disturbance call and witnessing her nursing her 6-week-old daughter. Officers say she appeared drunk, but there’s no report of her blood alcohol content. They booked her on child neglect charges.

And for some reason, she has pleaded guilty to the felony charge. But don’t worry. She won’t have to register as an offender against children.
