Pocket Life, a geo-aware social network backed by mobile network giant Vodafone, has launched to the public. The service allows users to update their friends on their current locations automatically, and also allows them to syndicate status updates and their recent activities to popular social networks like Facebook and MySpace. You can also use GPS to create a route (say, for mountain biking or hiking) and share that with friends over the network.
At launch Pocket Life is compatible with over 30 phones, including a number of Blackberries, Nokias, and Samsungs, with the iPhone listed as "Coming Soon" (you can ...
Put on your woot hats and prepare your fun cannons because the iPhone 3G is getting its official unlock on New Year's Eve. Isn't it a little cynical to launch a cellphone unlock on New Year's Eve? Listen: the folks who will buy an iPhone, break the contract, and soft unlock the thing probably won't be hanging out in the Rainbow Room come midnight. They'll be snug in their beds, tapping warily at their MacBook trackpads, counting down the seconds for the first true soft unlock of the iPhone 3G (sadly, I'll probably join ...
After my first few weeks on Twitter I quickly came to realize that most people are not nearly as interesting as they think they are - my Twitter feed was constantly inundated with tweets describing such mundane topics as my friends' favorite day of the week and what they had for breakfast. But within this apparent pool of mediocrity I found a few gems - Twitter users who managed to entertain me on a regular basis, and have kept me addicted to my Twhirl client for months on end. Now the time has come to bestow these great Tweeters with the honors ...
I had the absurdly awesome opportunity to attend a small MySpace-organized private lunch with author Paulo Coelho this afternoon in Paris before he spoke at the Le Web conference. Coelho, who has sold 135 million copies of The Alchemist, announced his new movie project, The Experimental Witch, in partnership with MySpace. He's pictured to the left with MySpace COO Amit Kapur, who was also at the lunch.
The movie is based on his book The Witch of Portobello and it marks the the first time he has granted movie rights for any of his creations. Hollywood producers have been ...
For anyone still stuck in the 20th century mindset that open source is just about Linux--or even solely about Linux and middleware like the JBoss application server--Forrester Research's new report, "Open source paves the way for the next generation of enterprise IT," should be an eye opener.
Through the report, Forrester makes it clear that open adoption is deep, wide, and covers all levels of the software stack, from operating system to applications.
The impact? Well, let's just say that enterprises may dabble in open source for the cost savings, but they will stay, according to Forrester, for ...
When Google pulled out of its proposed search advertising deal with Yahoo last month, it was chief legal counsel David Drummond who made the announcement. He cited concerns of a "protracted legal battle," but only now do we learn that the Justice Department was only three hours away from filing an antitrust lawsuit to block the deal. Sandy Litvack, the prosecutor hired by the justice Department to head up the case, tells Am Law Daily:
We were going to file the complaint at a certain time during the day. We told them we were going to file the complaint at ...
uTest, the crowdsourcing QA startup that lets companies rely on external developers to help them identify bugs, has closed a $5 million Series B funding round led by Longworth Venture Partners and Egan-Managed Capital, along with existing investors Mesco Ltd. and Massachusetts Technology Development Corp. The site offers customers a web based platform and tools for monitoring testing and QA cycles, which are available to them free of charge (they only ...

When Microsoft opened up its own online store for software downloads earlier this month, it signaled that packaged software is not long for this world. The problem is that the store offers only Microsoft products. Patrick Swieskowski, co-founder of YCombinator startup Secure by Design, points out:
You can basically only download Office or Vista. Leave it to MS to pitch an app store that sells mice and keyboards and Zunes...Swieskowski and his co-founder Sascha Kuzins, both serious open-source hackers, had a better idea: a download app store for Windows PCs that could distribute any third-party software, just like the ...
Lunascape is a new web browser that handles all three major web rendering engines — Firefox’s Gecko, Internet Explorer’s Trident and WebKit (which is used by Safari and Chrome). Lunascape Corp., a Tokyo-based web software company, offers the browser as a free download. Lunascape 5 Alpha is Windows-only and the first English version of the browser (a Japanese version dates back to 2001).
Lunascape 5 is an interesting alternative for people (like me) who primarily use Firefox but keep Internet Explorer as a second browser when they encounter rendering problems (i. e. on some of the few IE-only and ...
Technorati just announced on its official blog that the company has decided to lay off six employees as the result of generally poor economic conditions. Management is also taking a 10-15% pay cut, while all other surviving employees are getting their paychecks cut down by 10%.
Two of the six departures are from management positions, although no names have been released yet.
CEO Richard Jalichandra described those who have been laid off as "high performers who have worked long hours to get us where we are now. They’re also friends, and we’re very sad to see them go ...
